God’s Provision Exodus 13 -18 • Genesis 15: 13 -14 • The LORD brought them out of Egypt • He provided a deliver - Moses • God provided & Moses’ life was spared • God provided & Moses was educated • God provided & Moses developed
God’s Provision Exodus 13 -18 • The LORD provided and freed Israel with a “strong & mighty hand” • The miracles made a mockery of the Egyptian pantheon • God gave them favor so that they “plundered the Egyptians” • 600, 000 men ~ 2+ million
Preparation for Passover Exodus 11 -12 • Select a year old lamb on of month th • Kill it on 14 , spread blood on doorposts & lintel • Roast the lamb & eat it with unleavened bread & bitter herbs • Eat in haste with loins girded & sandals on – don’t go outside th 10
Passover Exodus 11 -12 • The LORD would pass through the land & kill all first born, but would “passover” houses with the blood. • The passover meal was to be celebrated yearly from then on as a memorial
Consecration of the First Born Exodus 13: 1 -16 • Instructions about yearly Passover observance & Feast of Unleavened Bread repeated (vs. 3 -8) • Instructions concerning sanctification of first born of man & animals ➢The first born belong to God (4: 22; 34: 19) ➢Details - 13: 13; 18: 15; Numbers 3: 11 -48)
Provision of Safety from Egypt • God provided pillar of cloud by day & pillar of fire by night to Exodus 13 • Migdol Etham • Baal-zephon •
Provision of Safety from Egypt Exodus 14 • God hardened Pharaoh’s heart so that he pursued Israel • Army included his 600 select chariots • Israel was afraid – & complained (11 -12) • They were to be silent & see the salvation of the LORD
Provision of Safety from Egypt Exodus 14 • The waters were divided – like a wall on both sides. They went through on dry land (21 -22) • Pharaoh’s army pursued them, were thrown into confusion & then all drowned (24 -29) • They sang a song of rejoicing (Exod. 15)
Provision of Water Exodus 15: 22 -27 • They ran out their own resources • They complained (11 -24) • Moses prayed & God provided to make the Baal-zephon •
Provision of Food • They grumbled about food Exodus 16 (3) • God would provide meat in the evening & “rain bread Baal-zephon •
Provision of Food Exodus 16 • Their grumbling was actually against God (vs. 8) stemming from selfishness & a lack of faith • Grumbling is a serious matter ➢Numbers ➢ 1 Corinthians 10: 1 -13 ➢Philippians 2: 14 -15
Provision of Food Exodus 16 • The glory of God appeared in the cloud • Quail covered the camp that evening • “Bread from heaven” came with the dew in the morning • They would have to trust God
Provision of Water Exodus 17: 1 -7 • They quarrel & complain again (vs. 2 -3) • Moses cries out to the Lord (vs 4) • God provides water (vs. 5 -6) Baal-zephon •
Provision of Military Victory Exodus 17: 8 -16 • Israel attacked by Amalek • Vs. 11 -13. Battle won by Moses keeping his hands held
Provision of Military Victory Exodus 17: 8 -16 • Built an altar, named it “Yahwehnissi” – the LORD is my Banner • Amalek lost battle & was cursed (14 -16) • Amalek destroyed – 1 Samuel 15
Provision of Wisdom Exodus 18: 1 -27 • Jethro brings Zipporah & 2 sons to meet Moses in the wilderness (vs. 1 -6) • Jethro rejoices over what God did for Israel & he worships the LORD (vs. 7 -11) • Jethro observes Moses’ activities (12 -16)
Conclusions • The LORD is good, gracious, merciful, patient & longsuffering – in OT & NT • God is still the same today • 2 Peter 3: 9 • Romans 2: 4 -5
Conclusions • Are you like: ➢ Jethro? – who praised God ➢ The people - who grumbled & complained ➢ Pharaoh – who continually hardened his heart until God hardened it for him.
