WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF GOVERNMENT? A government must make and enforce policies and laws that are binding on all people living within its territory.
WHY HAVE DIFFERENT LEVELS AND ORGANIZATION IN GOVERNMENT? To carry out the functions of the government
GOVERNMENT STRUCTURE Federal System- powers are divided between the national government and the state government Local or State Government National or Central Government
Unitary- all key powers are given to the national or central government Central or National Government Local or State Government
HOW CAN GOVERNMENTS BE CLASSIFIED? They can be classified by asking the question: � Who governs the country and how do they get and maintain power?
TYPES OF GOVERNMENT Autocracy- rule by one Oligarchy- rule by few Democracy- rule by many
AUTOCRACY RULE Government in which one person rules with unlimited power and authority. Get and maintain power through inheritance (king) or by ruthless use of military or police power. All political opposition is suppress
FORMS OF AUTOCRATIC GOVERNMENT RULE Dictatorship- most common example of autocracy rule; keeps power by force
AUTOCRACY RULE (CONTINUED) Totalitarianism- leader controls all aspects of life; keeps power by force Monarchy- a hereditary king or queen exercising supreme power Military Control
OLIGARCHY RULESystem of government in which small group holds power Get and maintain power by wealth, military power, social position, or a combination of these elements. Sometimes these governments give the appearance of control by the people- for example they hold elections but only offer one candidate or they have a legislature who only approves decisions and policies that the leaders already made All political opposition is suppressed Military Control, Dominant Party, One Party State
OLIGARCHY RULE- SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT IN WHICH SMALL GROUP HOLDS POWER Authoritarian government China is an example of oligarchy- the leaders get their power through social and political position.
DEMOCRACY RULEA system of government in which leader rule with consent of the citizens Get and maintain power from the people Direct democracy (1) is not found in the world today, instead representative democracy (2), like republics (3), are used.
DEMOCRACY RULE- A SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT IN WHICH LEADER RULE WITH CONSENT OF THE CITIZENS Republic- voters elect all major officials, who are responsible to the people Constitutional Monarchy (4)- there is a king or queen, but they have no real power. Legislative Democracy (5) Parliamentary Democracy (6) Presidental-Legislative Democracy (7) Presidental-Parliamentary Democracy (8) US and France are examples of democracy.
WHAT DOES AUTHORITARIAN MEAN? The leader or leaders hold the power. Word usually used instead of autocracy. People do not have freedom or choice.
