THE ROLES OF GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS: The following three people acted on the King of France’s behalf: Governor: Responsible for the security of the colony Bishop: Over see churches, missions and schools. Intendant: Most important-looked over the day to day operation of the colony. He was responsible for: Law and Order Trade Industry Transportation

SOVERIGN COUNCIL Assisted the three main people with their work. These people were appointed for five years.

SEIGNEURS (LANDOWNERS) King would give large amounts of land to wealthy and important citizens. These land grants were called seigneuries The seigneur gave out land to the habitants (settlers of New France). Do you think it was fair for land to be handed to the seigneurs this way? Why or why not?

JEAN TALON Was the first INTENDANT Disguised himself and went door to door asking the people questions about the living conditions in New France. He did this so that people would not fear him, and tell him the truth. People were complaining about: safety (from the British/Iroquios) Talon heard this and wrote to the King asking for soldiers.

SOLVING THE SAFETY PROBLEM Brought over 1, 500 soldiers from France Created a chain of forts along the St. Lawrence River to block the Iroquois from coming to New France. Charged into Iroquois village (but found it empty-so they burned it up).

LES FILLES DE ROI Talon conducted a census, and found out men outnumbered women-2 to 1. King of France sent orphaned or poor women looking for a better life over to New France with a dowry consisting of an ox, a cow, two barrels of saly beef, and a purse of money. Women lived in convents until they were married. Talon told the men they were not allowed to hunt until they were married. No chance for romance!

THE LADIES!

TALON’S PLANS FOR AGRICULTURE Found that the habitants were spending more time hunting than farming. Talon tried out different crops on his farm to see which would grow best. He imported many pigs and cows, and horses. Talon’s goal was to get the colony to produce enough food for its people.

TALON’S PLANS FOR INDUSTRY Started a ship-building yard in 1664 Created a small iron foundary Expanded fishing yards Opened a shoe business and factory. Opened a brewery.
