Next Steps Viable resource? Typically need at least a Class 3 wind resource for an economic, commercial-scale project using 1. 5 -MW or larger turbines. Otherwise, small wind turbine(s) may be feasible. Using web-based tools or wind resource maps is just the first step. Defines your average wind speed and wind class. Use that to do some preliminary economic analysis. Go / No Go and what project size? Go big? Talk to stakeholders. Get a met tower. Met tower data verifies the wind resource and defines the seasonality and variations of the resource. Solid data = project financing. Installing a met tower may require environmental review, FAA approval, etc.
Met Tower 3 rd Party Procurement and Installation: $50, 000 1 year of Data Collection & Reporting: $5, 000 - $10, 000 Loan programs NREL windpoweringamerica. gov Don’t let a developer put it up for you – then he owns the data, not you Solicit developers instead Wind data is valuable! NRG Systems met tower pallet
Fort Knox Class 1 wind 1. 8 k. W ~1, 000 k. Wh annually Skystream model or equivalent Cost-effective? Skystream 3. 7
Fort Wainwright Black Rapids Training Center Class 5 – 6 wind on average, but consistent? 100 k. W Design-Build Project ECIP funded Off-grid Will supplement on-site diesel generators
