Recap last week’s lesson – the work of Christian Aid. What do you remember about the Priest and the Levite in the parable of the Good Samaritan? They crossed the road and ignored the poor man who had been robbed and beaten. They acted in a way that people wouldn’t expect of them. There is another story that Jesus told about a time when people were acting in ways the listener didn’t expect.

The story is The Pharisee and the Tax Collector – Luke 18: 9 -14 Before we see the story, what is a Tax Collector? Can you think of another of Jesus’ parables that has a tax collector in it? Zacchaeus was a chief tax -collector at Jericho, known primarily for his faith in climbing a sycamore tree to see Jesus, and also his generosity in giving half of all he possessed.

Tq 8 g To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, —or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get. I am so good. ’ 9 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner. ’ 13 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. ” 14

Who was behaving in the way you would not expect? What was the moral in this parable that Jesus told? Jesus wants to teach people the importance of praying with the right attitude. This parable is aimed at those who think they are very righteous, and look down on others – that is, the Pharisees. . The Pharisee thought he was praying, but the only person he was praising was himself.
