Talitha koum! (“Little girl, I say to you, get up!”) John James Peter

Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat. (Mark 5: 42 -43)

When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. (Mark 6: 2) Nazareth

“Where did this man get these things? ” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us? ” And they took offense at him. (Mark 6: 2 -3) Nazareth

Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home. ” He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. (Mark 6: 4 -6) Nazareth

Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits. These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff— no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. (Mark 6: 7 -9)

Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them. ” (Mark 6: 10 -11) At the time, when a devout Jew leaves a Gentile city, they would shake the dust off their feet, to show their disengagement from the Gentile practices, and to prevent bringing any ungodly filth back to their hometowns.

They went out and preached that people should repent. They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them. (Mark 6: 12 -13)

He recounted passing by a rural village on the Chinese-Russian border during his escape and learning that the old lady sheltering him was a Christian. Interested in how Christianity managed to spread to such a remote area, he discovered that two young sisters in Henan province who have only just been saved for a year were moved by the Spirit in prayer to travel North. They signed up for an emigrant mission from the church, and embarked on a oneway journey, preaching along the way.

When they (only 18 and 19 years old at the time) reached this rural village, they were turned around by the village head. He told them, “Child, it’s only 7 days until the new year, so you really should return home to your families. We have many gods in this village already, and we do not need another”. But the two sisters refused to leave, instead kneeling down to pray on the spot at the entrance to the village. It was deep winter at the time and snowing heavily. When the village head saw them again while returning home that evening, he was moved by how the sisters believed in a God that can change people with such conviction. Eventually, he invited the sisters to stay the night, and asked the villagers to gather on the following day to hear their Gospel.

That is how the light of the Gospel reached this remote place that barely even registers on a map. Within the next 3 years, the two sisters had managed to raise over 500 churches in the surrounding area. Henan

It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.

So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled; yet he liked to listen to him. (Mark 6: 19 -20)

Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. (Mark 6: 21 -22)

The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you. ” And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom. ” (Mark 6: 22 -23)

She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for? ” “The head of John the Baptist, ” she answered. (Mark 6: 24)

At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter. ” (Mark 6: 25)

The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison. (Mark 6: 26 -27)

And brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. (Mark 6: 28)

When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. (Mark 6: 34)

By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place, ” they said, “and it’s already very late. Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat. ” But he answered, “You give them something to eat. ” (Mark 6: 35 -37)

“How many loaves do you have? ” he asked. “Go and see. ” When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish. ” Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. (Mark 6: 38 -39) Barley loaves Salt-cured sardines?

So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. (Mark 6: 40 -41)

They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand. (Mark 6: 42 -44)

Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. (Mark 6: 47 -48)

He was about to pass by them, but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, because they all saw him and were terrified. (Mark 6: 4850)

Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid. ” Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened. (Mark 6: 50 -52)
