What is a Good Sentence? ▪ A good sentence is complete with a subject and verb. ▪ Good sentences interest the reader by using descriptive language. ▪ A good sentence does not sound like a conversation; it tells and explains. ▪ Good sentences use proper capitalization, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
What is a Boring Sentence? ▪ Boring sentences are too long to keep the reader’s attention. ▪ Some boring sentences only have one subject and verb. ▪ Boring sentences do not use detail or explain. ▪ You might lose a reader’s interest if you have too many spelling and grammar mistakes. ▪ A boring sentence is one that you might expect in a paragraph before you read it. ▪ Example of a Boring Conclusion Sentence: ▪ “This is why Colorado is my favorite vacation spot. ”
State Whether Each Sentence is Good or Boring 1. Five years ago I lost my first tooth. 2. Occasionally, I enjoy riding my bike to the pond where I feed the young ducklings. 3. It wasn’t until I looked over that I noticed her bright, red coat. 4. He plays the violin, piano, guitar, and clarinet. 5. Everyday I get home at 2: 30 pm. 6. It took almost three years for me to muster up the courage to go to the school dance, but now I wouldn’t miss another chance to celebrate with my friends.
HOW DO I CHANGE A BORING SENTENCE INTO A GOOD SENTENCE?
Start with your boring sentence… Ask yourself: -Can I identify who the subject is? -Can I add where they were during this time? -Can I describe when this happened? -Can I give a reason why? -Find a noun… try to add one adjective in front of it. -Rearrange the sentence structure. Take your subject and put it at the back of the sentence. -Eliminate phrases like “This is why…” “I -Can I give an example or show am going to tell you about…. ” “So, that’s what…” how this happened?
Changing a Boring Sentence: Everyday I get home at 2: 30 pm. Ask! Where do I get home from? Everyday I get home from school at 2: 30 pm. How do I get home? Everyday I walk home from school at 2: 30 pm. Describe! What do I do at home? Everyday I walk home from school at 2: 30 pm and start my homework. Find a noun… add an adjective before: Everyday I walk home from school at 2: 30 pm and start my dreaded homework.
