Unit 1: Linear Functions SECTION 4: SOLVING LINEAR EQUATIONS
Objectives: I will be able to… Solve linear equations analytically Solve linear equations graphically Identify identities and contradictions
Objective #1: Solve linear equations analytically An equation is a statement that two expressions are equal. To solve an equation means to find all numbers that make the equation a true statement. Such numbers are called solution or roots of the equation. In this section, we solve linear equations in one variable. These are called conditional equations because they have one solution.
Example 1: Solve the equation.
Example 2: Solve the equation.
Example 3: Solve the equation.
Example 4: Solve the equation.
Example 5: Solve the equation.
Example 6: Solve the equation.
Example 7: Solve the equation.
Example 8: Solve the equation.
Objective #2: Solve linear equations graphically
Example 1 -8: We solved the previous examples analytically. Now support your solutions graphically on desmos.
Objective #3: Identify identities and contradictions Every equation solved thus far in this section has been a conditional equation with one solution. However, because the graphs of two linear functions may not intersect or may coincide there are two other solutions that may arise in solving equations.
A contradiction is an equation that has no solution. There is no point of intersection because the lines are parallel. Objective #3: Identify identities and contradictions An identity is an equation that is true for all values in the domain of its variables. There are infinitely many points of intersection because the lines coincide.
