STRUCTURE OF THE LEAGUE • The Assembly • All members – 1 vote each • No real power • The Council • Britain, France, Japan & Italy + small rotating group • The real power – all others must follow • Decisions had to be unanimous • The Secretariat • The “worker bees” – researchers, documentation, etc.

TACTICS OF THE LEAGUE: COLLECTIVE SECURITY • League was to provide “collective security” • If any member was attacked, all member nations would respond. • Collective security has FOUR “weapons”
WEAPONS OF COLLECTIVE SECURITY • Pressure of world opinion. • Trade sanctions • Disarmament • Use of military force • See pg 34 -35. • With your group, summarize how each of the “weapons” work – be prepared to explain & discuss

MORE PROBLEMS • Dominated by Britain and France • They didn’t see always eye to eye • France wanted a strong military alliance • Great Britain wanted less formal – • Concerned about empire • Didn’t want to get involved in a war • Japan & Italy wanted to be taken seriously as world powers

THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE LEAGUE • Help for refugees • International Labour Organisation encouraged the improvement of working conditions, workers’ rights. • Health Organisation organized in poor countries. Reduced cases of leprosy. • These are both still in effect (WHO)
