READING: I CAN DETERMINE THEME OF A STORY, MYTH, LEGEND, OR NOVEL AND PROVIDE DETAILS THAT SUPPORT THEME. A gray dove and a red ant lived peaceably in the same part of a forest. Though they hardly knew each other, they lived as pleasant neighbors. One morning, the ant went to the riverbank for his morning drink. The river was running faster and higher than normal because of heavy rains the night before. Alas, the ant tumbled into the river, to be carried along in its rushing current. The dove happened to be sitting in a tree beside the river. When she noticed the ant’s unhappy accident, she took pity on him. So she plucked a small branch from the tree and dropped it into the river. The ant then grabbed onto the branch and used it as boat to return to shore. Later that morning, the ant noticed a sly hunter in the shadows of the forest. He was aiming his bow toward the tree where the dove was resting. Without hesitation, the ant immediately stung the hunter sharply on his foot. This made him jump in surprise and pain, so he couldn’t let his arrow fly. This is how a tiny ant saved a gentle dove’s life.
