The Feudal System • • • • Lord landowner, granted a fief exchange for military Read –about the feudal system in in Europe protection and other services Highlight facts that support the main idea as you read Fief - land Vassal – person receiving a fief Serf – people who could not leave the place where they were born, tied to the land, what they produced was given to the lord Feudalism revolved around the lords, the knights, and the serfs. It was a system that provided land for the vassals, protection for the lords and serfs, and food for everyone!

Kings and Queens Kings and queens were the greatest lords of Europe, and all nobles and knights were their vassals. Nobles were vassals of kings and queens. Many were also lords of lower-ranking nobles and knights. Why were the knights important to feudal Europe? Knights served their noble lords in exchange for land. Peasants (Serfs) Peasants did not own land but worked on the land gave what they produced to the nobles and knights How did the peasants benefit from feudalism?
