Book of the Week - Part 3: Looking for Alaska by John Green Comment on the writing style. What did you notice about the way the author writes? New Read-On Summary Question: John Green’s books are meant for a teen audience. In his book Looking for Alaska, Green successfully creates relatable and realistic teenage characters who experience occasional trouble with their parents, peers, and teachers. A well known quote from the book communicates the feeling felt with your first love. After a day hanging out with Alaska, Pudge thinks to himself, “If people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane” (88).

Book of the Week - Part 2: Looking New Read-On Summary Question: Are for Alaska by John Green the characters believable? Why or why not? The characters created by Green often seem idealistic. Characters like Pudge, the Colonel, and Alaska are all intelligent and great students. On top of this, they are all witty and make quick remarks that display their opinions. These characters also share similar characteristics. For example. they all smoke and drink, oftentimes to deal with their problems. Although this is considered a major health risk, it’s a problem that lots of teens experience. At one point, when the group has left campus in order to find a place to smoke, Pudge asks Alaska why she smokes so quickly. Alaska responds, “ya’ll smoke to enjoy, I smoke to die” (44).
Book of the Week: Looking for Alaska by John Green Genre: Realistic Fiction Miles “Pudge” Halter, a junior from Florida, obsessed with the last words of famous people and in search of a “Great Perhaps, ” ventures out to Culver Creek Boarding School in Alabama. There, he meets Alaska Young, and Chip “the Colonel” Martin. However, after an unexpected accident, everything changes.
