Fetch? Balls and sticks capture my attention or else you’re off in some fog concerning seconds at a time. Catch? I don’t think so. —tomorrow, is that what you call it? My work: Bunny, tumbling leaf, a squirrel who’s—oh to unsnare time’s warp (and woof!), retrieving, joy—actually scared. Sniff the wind, then my haze-headed friend, you. This shining bark, I’m off again: muck, pond, ditch, residue a Zen master’s bronzy gong, calls you here, of any thrillingly dead thing. And you? entirely, now: bow-wow, bow-wow. Either you’re sunk in the past, half our walk, thinking of what you never can bring back,

Possible Themes Life should be much more carefree than we make it. This is shown by the carefree tone the dog maintains until the shift. Also by the concern shown by the dog when he begins to realize his master worries constantly. You cannot change what has happened or what is to come. "thinking of what you never can bring back" "off in some fog concerning—tomorrow, is that what you call it? "
Continued Dog really is mans best friend. The dog is concerned for his master's sanity He takes it upon himself to bring his human back to reality. " My work: to unsnare time’s warp" "This shining bark, . . . calls you here, entirely, now. . . "
Tone In the first half of the poem the tone is very sporadic and carefree. The dog obviously jumps around a lot with his thoughts. This section of the poem tells us how the dog wishes our lives would be. After the shift the tone gets more serious and informational It begins to show through word choice as well as metaphor that the dog really is concerned that his master feels he needs to worry about the past and future and takes his job quite seriously.
