Overview 2 § The Gold Performance Acknowledgment (GPA) system was in existence from 2002 to 2011. It replaced the former system of Additional Acknowledgments, which existed from 1997 to 2001. § GPAs acknowledged districts and campuses for high performance on indicators other than those used to determine accountability ratings. § These indicators were specified in statute or were included by the Commissioner of Education. § In 2011 districts were eligible for a maximum of 13 possible GPAs. Campuses, depending on grade span, were eligible for a maximum of 15 GPAs.

Overview 3 § Only schools and districts rated Academically Acceptable or above were eligible for GPA. § GPAs were released in late October or early November, along with the post-appeals ratings. § GPAs were not part of the rating label. During the final release of ratings, GPAs and the data for them were added to the accountability data tables. GPAs were also shown on lists of ratings and they were listed on the cover page of the AEIS reports. § The Gold Performance Acknowledgment (GPA) system was removed from statute by House Bill 3, 81 st Texas Legislature, 2009.

GPA: TAKS Indicators 5 The following GPAs rewarded academic achievement on specific subjects, using TAKS performance: § § College-Ready Graduates (TAKS, SAT, or ACT) All Commended Performance acknowledgments Both Comparable Improvement acknowledgments Both TSI acknowledgments

Definitions 6 College-Ready Graduates § Requirement: A school must have had 40% or more of their graduates exceed criteria on the TAKS exit-level test, the SAT test, or the ACT test. § Grades available: Only schools with graduates could be acknowledged for College-Ready Graduates. § Student Groups Evaluated: All Students, African American, Hispanic, White, and Economically Disadvantaged. § 2011 GPAs awarded: 754 (8. 8%) of 8, 526 schools acknowledged for College-Ready Graduates.

Definitions 7 Commended Performance § Requirement: A school must have had 30% or more students attain commended performance on TAKS for each subject—Reading/ELA, Writing, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. § Grades available: Varied by subject: mathematics and reading/ELA, grades 3 -11; writing, grades 4 and 7; science, grades 5, 8, 10, and 11; social studies, grades 8, 10, and 11. § Student Groups Evaluated: All Students, African American, Hispanic, White, and Economically Disadvantaged. § 2011 GPAs awarded: • Reading: 2, 464 (28. 9%) schools • Mathematics: 1, 895 (22. 2%) schools • Writing: 1, 724 (20. 2%) schools • Science: 2, 788 (32. 7%) schools • Social Studies: 1, 746 (20. 5%) schools

Definitions 8 Comparable Improvement § Requirement: Comparable Improvement (CI) was a measure that calculated how student performance on the TAKS reading and mathematics tests improved from one year to the next. It compared the change to that of the 40 schools that were demographically most similar to the target school. GPA was awarded to schools that scored in the top quartile on CI for reading and mathematics. § Grades available: Only schools with grades 4, 5, 6, 7, and/or 8 could receive acknowledgment for Comparable Improvement. § § Student Groups Evaluated: All Students only. 2011 GPAs awarded: • Reading: 1, 566 (18. 4%) schools • Mathematics: 1, 545 (18. 1%) schools

Definitions 9 Texas Success Initiative – Higher Education Readiness Component § Requirement: A school must have had 65% or more of their grade 11 students scoring above a scale score of 2200 on the TAKS. § Grades available: Only schools that tested grade 11 students on the exit-level TAKS could be acknowledged for these indicators. § Student Groups Evaluated: All Students, African American, Hispanic, White, and Economically Disadvantaged. § 2011 GPAs awarded: • ELA: 542 (6. 4%) schools • Mathematics: 651 (7. 6%) schools

GPA: Non-TAKS Indicators 10 The following three GPAs rewarded academic achievement on assessments other than the TAKS. § § § Advanced Course/Dual Enrollment Completion AP/IB Results SAT/ACT Results

Definitions 11 Advanced Course/Dual Enrollment Completion § Requirement: A school must have had 30% or more of their students complete and receive credit for at least one advanced course in grades 9 -12. The indicator included dual enrollment courses for which a student received both high school and college credit. § Grades available: Only schools with grades 9, 10, 11, and/or 12 could be acknowledged for this indicator. § Student Groups Evaluated: All Students, African American, Hispanic, White, and Economically Disadvantaged. § 2011 GPAs awarded: 186 (2. 2%) of 8, 526 schools were acknowledged for this indicator.

Definitions 12 AP/IB Results § Requirement: A school must have had 15% or more of their students complete at least one AP or IB course, and of those tested, 50% or more scoring at or above the criterion score. § Grades available: Only schools with grades 11 and/or 12 could be acknowledged for AP/IB Results. § Student Groups Evaluated: All Students, African American, Hispanic, and White. § 2011 GPAs awarded: 128 (1. 5%) of 8, 526 schools were acknowledged for AP/IB Results.

Definitions 13 SAT/ACT Results § Requirement: A school must have had 70% or more take either the SAT or ACT assessments, and of those tested, 40% or more scoring at or above the criterion score. § Grades available: Only schools with graduates could be acknowledged for SAT/ACT Results. § Student Groups Evaluated: All Students, African American, Hispanic, and White. § 2011 GPAs awarded: 60 (0. 7%) schools were acknowledged for SAT/ACT Results.

GPA: Other Indicators 14 The following GPAs rewarded performance not based on assessments: § § Attendance Rate Recommended High School Program/Distinguished Achievement Program

Definitions 15 Attendance Rate § § Requirement: A school must have had an attendance rate at or above: • 96% for District/Multi-Level Schools • 96% for Middle School/Junior High Schools • 95% for High Schools • 97% for Elementary Schools Grades available: Schools with grades 1 -12 could be acknowledged for Attendance Rate. § Student Groups Evaluated: All Students, African American, Hispanic, White, and Economically Disadvantaged. § 2011 GPAs awarded: 1, 428 (16. 7%) schools were acknowledged for Attendance Rate.

Definitions 16 Recommended High School Program/Distinguished Achievement Program § Requirement: A school must have had 85% or more of their graduates meeting or exceeding the requirements for the Recommended High School Program or Distinguished Achievement Program. § Grades available: Schools with graduates could be acknowledged for this indicator. § Student Groups Evaluated: All Students, African American, Hispanic, White, and Economically Disadvantaged. § 2011 GPAs awarded: 533 (6. 3%) schools were acknowledged for this indicator.

GPA Results for Schools in 2011 18 § § In 2011, 77 percent of the 7, 877 campuses evaluated for GPA earned one or more acknowledgments. No campuses earned all 15 acknowledgments: • One campus earned 14. • One campus earned 13. • Thirteen campuses earned 12. • 1, 529 campuses (19 percent) earned 1 acknowledgment. • 1, 302 (17 percent) earned 2 acknowledgments. • 1, 107 (14 percent) earned 3 acknowledgments.

GPA Results for Schools in 2011 19 § § At the campus level, the most frequent acknowledgment earned was Commended on science (32. 7 percent), followed by Commended on reading/ELA (28. 9 percent), and Commended on mathematics (22. 2 percent). The acknowledgment least earned was SAT/ACT with only 60 campuses earning this accolade.
