Eureka Stockade Riot or Rebellion? • Between 1851 and 1854 miners and police clashed over the injustice of the goldfield licensing system and police corruption • In December 1854, over 500 men led by Peter Lalor gathered on the outskirts of Ballarat build a stockade and unfurled their flag • Troops from Melbourne overran the stockade and killed 22 men

After the clash • A Royal Commission condemned the goldfield administration and the cost of mining gold fell to 2 shillings (AUD $ 83. 00) per month • Peter Lalor, the leader of the rebels became a member of the Victorian parliament
