WHAT IS ACE? ACE stand for Answer, Cite, Explain. This is the common format for short answer responses. You not only use this format in high school, but you will also employ and use the same format in college.
ANSWER What is it? A- Answer the Question! § Before you can answer the question, you must be able to restate the question within the context of your answer. § Failure to restate the question results in your answer being vague and too specific. § Anyone should be able to read your response. § If referring to a specific text for the short answer, you may want to introduce the text here. Example How did Martin Luther King justify the purpose of nonviolent direct action? In “Letter From Birmingham Jail, ” Martin Luther King seeks to justify non violent actions in Birmingham by demonstrating that non violence brings about exposure and tension which will ultimately lead to action and negotiation.
CITE What is it? C- Cite Your Answer! § Provide evidence, either from a specific text (if applicable) or a specific example that supports your answer. § The evidence MUST be connected to your answer. § The evidence should be in the form of an embedded quote (if applicable). Correct MLA citation should be used. Example In response to a call for “negotiation” by four white clergymen, King responds by stating that the goal of nonviolence is to open up the path for real negotiation. Vague Pronoun Reference? A vague pronoun reference is when an author starts a sentence with a pronoun: he, she, it, that, this. § You MUST make sure that you use the antecedent – the noun for which the pronoun stands- when you use a pronoun. § Vague pronoun references make writing vague and hard to follow.

During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960 s, Martin Luther King urged protest in the form of nonviolence. He justified his decision by stating “nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis…that a community that has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue” (King). Nonviolent direct action served as an effective method of protest through most of the Civil Rights struggles in the United States. This action demonstrates the usefulness of nonviolence as a means of protest since the actions will open the door up to negotiation and the restoration of Civil Rights.
