Going abroad
Why should I go abroad? 1. Work 2. Help others 3. Travel, see the world 4. Study, improve language skills
1. Work • Your work experience is a big advantage when you search for a job • Employers will rather give you a job when you have some work experience abroad
Offers • Work and Travel: - stay in a foreign country and work at the same time - there are organisations just for work and travel - you get a flat and a job for a certain period of time • Placement in another country: - gain work experience - get to know everyday life of other people - learn the language
Dos and Don'ts • BEFORE you go: Look for information about the organisation or the offer • Get to know the language • Look for a place to live, if there's no offer from the organisation • Save enough money • Be prepared to work hard • Don‘t go there without any information • Don‘t go, if you are not really sure • Don‘t go without having a place to stay
Advantages and disadvantages • Learn the language • Problems in school • Gain experience • Difficult to start your life in the new country • Get to know the culture and the country • Homesickness • Make friends • Good for your CV and your future job • Become more independent and mature
Help others
Countries which need your help • Third world countries: -Kambodscha -Columbia -Somalia -Ethiopia -Sudan -Afghanistan, Pakistan, Irak -Chile -Brazil
Dos and Don'ts • • Help people Donate money Support the inhabitants Be friendly and polite • Don‘t be lazy • Don‘t be rude • Respect the traditions of the inhabitants • Don‘t pollute the environment
3. Travel to see the world • Lots of young people dream of travelling the world after school • Good institution for young people: student travel; eurovacation. com; smarter travel
challenges for the participant: dos don`ts • buy a „around the world ticket“ if you really won‘t to see everyhing • take time for seeing interesting architecture • write down the list of places you want to visit • use the vacation for improving your language skills • don‘t stay to long at one country or city; there are others waiting for your visit • don‘t go only shopping for example in London • don‘t ignore the rules of other countries • don‘t only speak your language
Ways of travelling • Exchange programme • Interrail • Youth camps • Sport camps • Language trips • Camping trips • Holidays with parents
Studying in other Countries
Pros • • • Get to know a foreign country Meet new people Learn something about a different culture Looks good in your CV Gain some new experiences Improve language skills
Cons A long time away from home Total change of life Expensive Maybe necessary to catch up at school • No (not much) contact to your „old“ friends • •
Organise: - a place to study - a place to stay - a job to earn money
Dos - be nice & polite - use the time efficiently - be open for new cultures - use the chance to learn a new language
Don'ts - just sit at home - be impolite or rude - talk too much to your friends in your „old“ language (telephone)
