What is Grace? ü Χάρις, (charis) – to show kindness to someone, with the implication of graciousness on the part of the one showing such kindness (L&N, 88. 66) ü A beneficial disposition toward someone (BDAG)

What is Grace? ü Χάρις, (charis) – “that which bestows or occasions pleasure, delight or causes favorable regard…subjectively, on the part of the bestower, the friendly disposition from which the kindly act proceeds, graciousness, loving-kindness, goodwill generally” (Vine’s)

What is Grace? ü Χάρις, (charis) – About 155 times in NT 24 x as salutations, etc. 104 x as “grace” Favor – 8 x Thank(s) – 9 x Gift, credit, commendable, benefit, gracious.

What is Grace? ü Χάρις, (charis) – Used in 2 senses 1) A gift from another 2) The disposition of gratitude by the receiver of the gift (cf. 1 Timothy 1: 12)

What is Grace? Grace is NOT: ü Permission to sin – Rom. 6: 1 -2 ü Based upon human performance (earned) Rom. 11: 5 -6, 3: 23 ü Cheap (requires genuine obedience) ü Exclusive – there are many factors in our salvation!

What is Grace? Grace: ü Our concern is with the grace of God in our salvation. Unmerited favor ü Grace is God’s part in man’s salvation (that which man cannot do)

The Grace of God ü We ARE saved by grace! ü Ephesians 2: 8 -9 ü Titus 2: 11

The Grace of God ü ü ü ü God WANTS us to be saved John 3: 16 Titus 2: 11 Romans 3: 23 -24 2 Peter 3: 9 1 Timothy 2: 4 He did something about it!

The Grace of God ü He put a plan in place ü 2 Timothy 1: 9, according to His own purpose ü 1 Peter 1: 10, prophets who prophesied of the grace to come ü Eph. 1: 3 -10

The Grace of God ü He sent Jesus to die ü John 3: 16, Rom. 3: 24 ü Hebrews 2: 9, He tasted death “by the grace of God” ü Romans 5: 6 -8, 15

The Grace of God ü Jesus came by His own grace ü John 1: 14 -18 ü 2 Corinthians 8: 9 ü Hebrews 2: 9

Grace and our Salvation ü We need the grace of God! Romans 3: 23 -24 ü God offered the gift of salvation – Romans 6: 23, Eph. 2: 5 -8, Titus 2: 11

Grace and our Salvation ü We can abuse the grace of God ü By willfully refusing to repent of sinful behavior Hebrews 10: 26 -31
