The reason God desires us is simple: He is love, so He gives us love. It’s who He is… Whether we realize it or not, we’re wired the same way as God with the desire to love and be loved

We have the same yearnings for connection through relationships that God does…

…and sometimes we experience the same love given-rejected-accepted cycle when our relationships don’t work out the way we hope. Desired by God

The seemingly abrupt switch from a discussion of salvation to a reflection on the nation of Israel is intentional. It is indeed a continuation of Paul’s theme of justification by faith – not by birthright or works.

It is also an exposition of the Father’s fathomless faithfulness

Romans 9 With Christ as my witness, I speak with utter truthfulness. My conscience and the Holy Spirit confirm it.

2 My heart is filled with bitter sorrow and unending grief 3 for my people, my Jewish brothers and sisters.

I would be willing to be forever cursed —cut off from Christ!— if that would save them.

They are the people of Israel, chosen to be God’s adopted children. God revealed His glory to them. 4

He made covenants with them and gave them His law. He gave them the privilege of worshiping Him and receiving his wonderful promises.

5 Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are their ancestors, and Christ Himself was an Israelite as far as His human nature is concerned.

And He is God, the One who rules over everything and is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.

Well then, has God failed to fulfill His promise to Israel? 6

No, for not all who are born into the nation of Israel are truly members of God’s people!

Being descendants of Abraham doesn’t make them truly Abraham’s children. For the Scriptures say… 7

“Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted, ” though Abraham had other children, too.

This means that Abraham’s physical descendants are not necessarily children of God. Only the children of the promise are considered to be Abraham’s children. 8

For God had promised, “I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son. ” 10 This son was our ancestor Isaac. When he married Rebekah, she gave birth to twins. 9

But before they were born, before they had done anything good or bad, she received a message from God. (This message shows that God chooses people according to His own purposes; 11

He calls people, but not according to their good or bad works. ) 12

She was told, “Your older son will serve your younger son. ” 13 In the words of the Scriptures, “I loved Jacob, but I rejected Esau. ”

“…the Lord’s hatred is against Esau’s idolatrous descendants. In the same way, the Lord’s love of Jacob refers to Jacob’s descendants, who, although often rebellious and sometimes idolatrous, were His sovereignly elected people through whom the world’s Redeemer would come. ” Various commentators

What Next? Deuteronomy 7 9 “Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God…

What Next? …who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments;

What Next? Galatians 3 16 God gave the promises to Abraham and his child.

What Next? And notice that the Scripture doesn’t say “to his children, ” as if it meant many descendants. Rather, it says “to his child”— and that, of course, means Christ.

What Next? 1 Corinthians 1 God is faithful, by whom you were [are being] called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. 9
