GOD IS WITH US ALWAYS

• Who has ever been afraid? • What were you afraid of? • How did you get over that fear? • How did you feel once you were no longer frightened?

GOD LEADS THE PEOPLE HOME God saw that his people were suffering so God called Moses and told him to save the Hebrew people. When they were escaping from Egypt, they came to the Red Sea and thought that they were going to be killed by the Egyptian army. Moses asked God to help them and God did. God parted the Red Sea and the Hebrews passed through it but when the Egyptian army followed them, the sea closed in and drowned them.

When they were in the desert and were running out of food and water, Moses once again asked God to help. God provided them with water from a rock, and manna which could be cooked to make bread and quails for them to eat in the evening. God led them to the Promised Land with a pillar of cloud in the daytime and a column of fire in the night. God was there with them all the time.

JESUS CALMS THE STORM That evening, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the east side. ” So they left the crowd, and his disciples started across the lake with him in the boat. Some other boats followed along. Suddenly a windstorm struck the lake. Waves started splashing into the boat, and it was about to sink.

Jesus was in the back of the boat with his head on a pillow, and he was asleep. His disciples woke him up and said, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re about to drown? ” Jesus got up and ordered the wind and the waves to be quiet. The wind stopped, and everything was calm. Jesus asked his disciples, “Why were you afraid? Don’t you have any faith? ” Now they were amazed and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

SOME DISCUSSION QUESTIONS • • Where did this happen? Who was there? Why were the disciples so afraid? If you were in the boat with them, how do you think you would feel? • What did Jesus do and say? • Imagine you were in the boat and saw what Jesus did. What would your reaction be? • What do these stories teach us about God and Jesus when we are in times of trouble or we are suffering?
