Goby and shrimp symbiosis By Matthew Cheung
Introduction Gobies (Genus: Gobiinae) Pistol Shrimp (Family: Alpheidae) Mutualism: both benefit (Goby alerts shrimp and prevents burrow from collapsing, shrimp offers the goby shelter from predators)
Fig. 1: Amblyeleotris with Alpheus randalli
Climate Change (not Global Warming) Changing the albedo (reflectance) of the sun: 1. 4 F since 1880 Positive feedback cycle 6 global impacts: Freshwater Resources, Ecosystems, Food and Forests, Coastal areas, Industry and Society, and Health
Ocean Complexity
Materials 8 medium-long fish tanks (w/ covers) 7 water filters (w/ all pieces) 14 bags of colored gravel 7 aerators 7 thermal rods 7 thermometers 7 extension rubber tubes 3 -4 way dividers 3 special tanks w/ tube connection 2 PVC wide tubes p. H paper Paper tage Decoy fish and shrimps
Method 1. Assigning each of the 26 organisms to their section of the tanks 2. Putting one of the Gobiinae and Alpheid shrimp in the special matrix 3. See how long they would built-up the symbiotic relationship (max 1 day) 4. Next day, see how they would react to different stimuli by using decoys and food 5. Continue until all possible option choices are done 6. Finally, place all organisms in a tank to see what are their selections of symbiotic mates
Why? ? Better understand genealogy of symbiotic relationship With climate change, would animals be able to survive under similar conditions Prevent animals from extinction Balancing the world ecosystem Recreation enjoyment!!
