Making sure LIFELONG LEARNING happens through GOAL SETTING

People set goals often but then we: • FORGET ABOUT THEM • GIVE UP ON THEM • GET TOO BUSY • ARE DISAPPOINTED • MAKE NEW ONES THAT ARE EASIER TO ACCOMPLISH This is often because the goals we set in the first place were not very smart. We need to set SMART goals…

Specific Measurable Attainable / Achieveable Relevant Time-specific

Specific Your goal must be as clear and detailed as possible: For example: I want to learn more stuff I want to learn new French words

Measurable Breaking your goal down into smaller, more manageable pieces, not only helps you to aim for specific things but it is rewarding and motivating when you can measure your progress towards a goal: For example: I want to speak French I want to learn 10 new French words

Attainable / Achieveable Setting unrealistic goals that are too far beyond your reach can be more demotivating than encouraging: For example: I want to get five academic degrees one day I want to meet the requirements for university acceptance

Relevant Goals need to be important to you as you are often the only one who can actually make them happen! Don’t set goals that you think you should set, set goals that are relevant to your life, who you want to be and what you want to achieve. For example: I want to run a marathon (when you have never run any further than 1 km and don’t like running) I want learn Spanish because I want to work in Spain

Time-specific Set a dead line for your goal so you can stay motivated. Make sure that the time you allocate yourself is realistic. For example: I want to learn to surf before next weekend. I want to read 6 books before the end of the year.
