Lower limb disease: the extent of the problem

Prevalence of leg ulcers Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI): • Affects between 20% and 40% of adult population (Shammeri et al 2014, Lee et al 2015) • Progression of varicose veins and CVI 47% in longitudinal study (Lee et al 2015) • 1. 5% of the Adult population will have a leg ulcer in any one year (Guest et al. 2015)

What we know • Venous ulcers are chronic wounds affecting around 1% of the population and 3% of people aged over 80 • Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) most often occur in the gaiter region of the lower leg, from just below the ankle up to mid-calf. • They are defined as any break in the skin that has been present for at least six weeks

Treatment The gold standard of treatment is compression therapy - provided assessment indicates this is safe (holistic assessment including Doppler APBI)
