What are our big challenges? • • Revalidation Consequences of EU Directives Ensuring the independence of adjudication Co-ordinating all stages of medical education following merger with PMETB • Delivering value for money • Communicating effectively with the medical profession
Revalidation What is revalidation? Confirm doctor is up to date and fit to practise Renewal of licence When will it start? Autumn 2012
Revalidation – why?
Revalidation n Generic standards of practice set by the GMC n Specialist knowledge n and skills set by GMC with guidance on how to meet those standards provided by the Colleges n Annual appraisal Multi source feedback once or twice in 5 years
Revalidation n Positive affirmation of a doctor’s fitness to practise by a Responsible Officer n The final decision on whether or not to revalidate any doctor remains with the GMC
Revalidation What are the challenges? n It’s got to be simple but effective n Early identification and remediation of problems – not a once in 5 years event
EU issues 1. Language assessment. Main legal impediment to the GMC ensuring language competence is domestic rather than European. 2. Fitness to practise information. There is no legal duty on regulators to proactively share information about doctors who are unfit to practise. 3. Medical Education. Mutual recognition of professional qualifications focuses on duration of training rather than its content, quality and outcomes.
