Glucose Testing
Glucose Monitoring Blood Glucose Interstitial Glucose The child can continue wearing an interstitial glucose testing device while in hospital however this must not be used to make clinical decisions. Only blood glucose testing will be used.
Targets are important • Blood glucose between 3. 9 and 6. 9 mmol/l • Hb. A 1 c 48 mmol/mol • Average blood glucose reading on meter less than 8 mmol/l • Optimal Glycaemic control reduces risk of complications • Short term – Hyperglycaemia /Diabetic Ketoacidosis or Hypoglycaemia • Long term – Retinopathy, Nephropathy, Neuropathy
Blood Glucose Testing for in-patients • Pre- prandial + 2 hour post prandial breakfast, lunch, dinner • The 2 hour post prandial test will ideally coincide with mid morning, mid afternoon and bedtime snack • 4 hourly overnight unless otherwise directed • For example • 0800. 1000. 1200. 1400. 1630. 1930 2200. 0000. 0400 • EXCEPTION – patient on DKA protocol, hypoglycaemia – hourly testing
