Glow Stick Lab
PRE-LAB • Law of conservation of mass: matter is not created or destroyed in any chemical or physical change; also called law of conservation of matter • Mass is not lost or gained • No new atoms are created, no atoms are destroyed
QUESTION HOW DOES TEMPERATURE AFFECT HOW BRIGHT A GLOW STICK WILL GLOW?
HYPOTHESIS IF A GLOW STICK IS PLACED IN COLD WATER, THEN BRIGHTNESS OF THE GLOW STICK WILL BE (MORE/LESS) _____ BRIGHT THAN IF THE GLOW STICK WERE PLACED IN WARM WATER.
VARIABLES INDEPENDENT VARIABLE _______________________________
SUPPLIES • DIGITAL SCALE • 2 GLOW STICKS • CUP OF COLD WATER • CUP OF WARM WATER
PROCEDURE 1) Take mass of uncracked glow stick. 2) Then crack entire glow stick. Take its mass again after it’s cracked.
PROCEDURE 3) Crack other glow stick. Submerge one into cold water and the other into warm water. 4) Compare the 2 & record observations.

POST-LAB Was your hypothesis supported by the data you got from doing the experiment? In other words, did what you predict would happen actually happen? (You don’t have to copy this, just answer the question in a complete sentence)
