GLOSSOP PARISH CHURCH OF ALL SAINTS Palm Sunday 28 th March 2021

Gathering to worship God Let us worship God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Lord, direct our thoughts, teach us to pray, lift our hearts to worship you in spirit and in truth, through Jesus Christ.

Saying sorry to God our Father, we come to you in sorrow: For the mean thoughts we have had, forgive us and help us. For the hurtful words we have said, forgive us and help us. For the wrong things we have done, forgive us and help us.

Hearing the Word of God It’s nearly Easter! Today, the last Sunday in Lent, we remember Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey. The people cheered and waved branches. They were so pleased to see Jesus! Here’s one version of the story… The next day the large crowd that had come to the Passover Festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting, “Praise God! God bless him who comes in the name of the Lord! God bless the King of Israel!”

Jesus found a donkey and rode on it, just as the scripture says, “Do not be afraid, city of Zion! Here comes your king, riding on a young donkey. ” His disciples did not understand this at the time; but when Jesus had been raised to glory, they remembered that the scripture said this about him and that they had done this for him. You can find this story about Palm Sunday in John 12. 12 -16.

Responding to the Word of God The people cheered and shouted. The children cheered and shouted. But some people were NOT happy. They were the religious leaders. I wonder why the religious leaders were unhappy about Jesus. I wonder if we’d been in the crowd what we would have done when we saw Jesus.

We’re coming to the end of Lent. It started on Ash Wednesday nearly six weeks ago. I wonder what you’ve learnt about God during Lent. I wonder what you’ve learnt about yourself during Lent. I wonder what you’ve learnt about the world during Lent.

Praying to God We pray for God’s grace, saying: Lord, receive our praise and hear our prayer. True and humble king, hailed by the crowd as Messiah: grant us the faith to know you and love you, that we may be found beside you on the way of the cross, which is the path of glory

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name; your kingdom come, your will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.
