GLOSSOP PARISH CHURCH OF ALL SAINTS Christ the King 22 nd November 2020

Gathering to worship God Let us worship God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Lord, direct our thoughts, teach us to pray, lift our hearts to worship you in spirit and in truth, through Jesus Christ.

Saying sorry to God our Father, we come to you in sorrow: For the mean thoughts we have had, forgive us and help us. For the hurtful words we have said, forgive us and help us. For the wrong things we have done, forgive us and help us.

Hearing the Word of God Have you ever seen a camel? They are very special animals! Camels have a hump on their back and a long, long neck. They can walk for miles and miles even when it is hot and dry without needing to stop for a drink! But I’ll let Mavis explain what happened…

“Well, hello! My name is Mavis! Do you like my hump, and my long neck? When I see something interesting, I wiggle my hump, and look down my long, long neck.

You could pretend you have a beautiful hump and long neck like me – why don’t you try? Wiggle your hump and look down your long, long neck. Yes, that’s not bad for beginners!

My story started many years ago in a far away land. My human was a rich, wise and clever man. He read and studied all day long. One evening, just as it was getting really dark, he suddenly shouted… A STAR!

I wiggled my hump and looked down my long, long neck. I couldn’t see anything! Then I remembered. Stars are in the sky! Silly me! I had to look UP! This was a huge and beautiful star. What could it mean?

My human was wondering the same thing. He got out a special scroll about stars and went to meet his friends to talk about the star. I wiggled my hump and looked down my long, long neck at the star scroll. But I didn’t know what this new star was. My human and his friends talked and talked. I might have had a little snooze… But then, it seemed that they had a plan!

They started packing for a long journey. They chose some very special gifts to take. I wiggled my hump and looked down my long, long neck at these special presents. This must be a really important person that we were going to see. It was a VERY long way. Even me and my other camel friends were getting tired. We stopped at a palace.

I wiggled my hump and looked down my long, long neck at the king wearing the crown. But he wasn’t very nice, I didn’t trust him – he seemed nasty. I was glad when we left. We followed the star to a little stable.

I wiggled my hump and looked down my long, long neck. There was a little baby with his mum and dad. There was a donkey, some shepherds and sheep. Had we come all this way to look at a baby in a stable?

My humans explained that they saw a star and knew that a new King had been born. They knelt down by the baby and gave him the gifts. The baby smiled. He seemed to understand, even though he was so small. I was so glad I had gone to see this special new King.

We didn’t have phones to take photos on in those days, but I have a picture to remind me of that very special time. Would you like to see it? If you look carefully you can see me next to a friendly donkey called Edna. Perhaps you can see the star in the sky too?

Praying to God We pray for God’s grace, saying: Lord, receive our praise and hear our prayer. Creator of the heavens, who led the Magi by a star to worship the Christ-child: guide and sustain us, that we may find our journey’s end in Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name; your kingdom come, your will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

The Grace May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us now and evermore.
