Gathering to worship God Let us worship God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Lord, direct our thoughts, teach us to pray, lift our hearts to worship you in spirit and in truth, through Jesus Christ.

Saying sorry to God our Father, we come to you in sorrow: For the mean thoughts we have had, forgive us and help us. For the hurtful words we have said, forgive us and help us. For the wrong things we have done, forgive us and help us.

Hearing the Word of God Families can be so complicated! Maybe your family, or one you know, has children with different mums or different dads. Perhaps a brother or sister belongs to another family too. In every family people get cross and fall out sometimes, but it can be really hard when one side of the family is jealous of the other. This is what happened to Abraham in today’s reading. . . Genesis 21. 8 -21

Responding to the Word of God The problem was that Abraham had two sons, and they had different mums. Isaac’s mum, Sarah, thought that Hagar’s son, Ishmael was being unkind to Isaac. She told Abraham to get rid of Hagar and Ishmael. Oh dear! What do you think of this?

I wonder what you think it means to be jealous of somebody? Maybe they have something that you’d like, or they can do something that you wish you could do. … I’ve got a new computer game … I’m in the school football team … I go on lots of holidays … I’ve got a new puppy Do you think you might feel jealous of these people?

What can you do if you feel jealous? What did Sarah do in the story you read? What did you think of what she did? God cares for everyone. How did he show that Ishmael was important as well as Isaac?

Praying to God We pray for God’s grace, saying: Lord, receive our praise and hear our prayer. Dear God, you care for everyone, the rich and the poor, those who are amazingly good at something and those who are ‘just ordinary’, those with loads of friends and those who find it hard to talk to others. You took care of Hagar and Ishmael: help us to care for people who others forget.

Collect Faithful Creator, whose mercy never fails: deepen our faithfulness to you and to your living Word, Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name; your kingdom come, your will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.
