GLOSSOP PARISH CHURCH OF ALL SAINTS A service for the 11 th Sunday after Trinity 23 rd August 2020

Gathering to worship God Let us worship God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Lord, direct our thoughts, teach us to pray, lift our hearts to worship you in spirit and in truth, through Jesus Christ.

Saying sorry to God our Father, we come to you in sorrow: For the mean thoughts we have had, forgive us and help us. For the hurtful words we have said, forgive us and help us. For the wrong things we have done, forgive us and help us.

Hearing the Word of God Today we start reading the second book of the Bible, Exodus starts by telling us that God’s people were having a terrible time in Egypt. The king – called Pharaoh – wanted to kill every baby boy that was born. That’s horrible! But one baby’s mum had a great idea! Click here watch the story. Responding to the Word of God I wonder what Moses’ mum thought when she put Moses into the basket in the river. She must have been so worried about her baby. Sometimes things go wrong for us. I wonder what we think when things go wrong. When things go wrong it can sometimes be hard to know where God is. We might wonder if God has forgotten us.

I wonder if Moses’ mum asked where God was. I wonder if she thought God had forgotten her. I wonder what Moses’ mum thought when the princess took Moses out of the river. I wonder what Moses’ mum thought when she was asked by the princess to look after Moses. I wonder if Moses’ mum saw where God was – and trusted God to do something amazing. I wonder what helps us trust God when things are difficult.

Praying to God We pray for God’s grace, saying: Lord, receive our praise and hear our prayer. God of glory, the end of our searching, help us to lay aside all that prevents us from seeking your kingdom, and to give all that we have to gain the pearl beyond all price, through our Saviour Jesus Christ.

In darkness and in light, in trouble and joy, help us, heavenly Father, to trust your love, to serve your purpose, and to praise your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name; your kingdom come, your will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.
