Globetrotting Materials: VRmat Material
Lesson Introduction – Orientation • This presentation will take you through using the VRmat Material to transfer material information from V-Ray for Maya to V-Ray for 3 ds Max • The information centers around the VRmat Material node • This lesson topic is approximately 20 minutes in length • Presentation covers all 3 Learning Cycles for the Lesson Topic – Lecture, Demonstration, and Activity
Lesson Topic: VRmat Material • Objective – We will transfer V-Ray material data across 3 D applications • Set up materials in your 3 D application of choice and give them to others who might be using other applications as long as everyone is using V-Ray • Outcome – Export a VRay. Mtl from Maya and use it within 3 ds Max
Lecture: Terminology • Here’s some terms to know when thinking about the VRmat Material – VRmat Converter – A tool used to export a V-Ray material data to an external file that can be read by other iterations of V-Ray – VRmat Editor – A tool used to make minor adjustments to the. vrmat file’s settings when brought into a 3 D application – Output Directory – The folder where. vrmat files will be exported to when using the VRmat Converter
Lesson Topic: VRmat Material • VRmat Overview – Not all studios and projects use just one tool to complete their work – Different Departments could use different programs depending on the type of work they do – If the different programs use V-Ray, they can use tools like the VRmat Material to transfer materials from one program to another – This is useful if one department (like Look. Dev) uses one program but hands off assets/shots to another department (like Lighting) who could use another program – Material file – The. vrmat file that stores the material data, which can be moved from program to program – Material list – The collection of materials stored in the. vrmat file
Lesson Topic: VRmat Material • VRmat Converter – Found in the V-Ray Shelf or from Create menu > V-Ray > Open V-Ray VRMat Converter – Used to export V-Ray Materials to. vrmat files – Set Output Directory (button) – brings up a dialog to set the location where the. vrmat file will be saved – Convert (button) – when materials in the top section of the window are selected, the Convert button with start the export process – Export in one vrmat – will save multiple materials into a single. vrmat file – This will populate the Material List in the VRmat attributes
Lesson Topic: VRmat Material • VRmat Editor – Used to adjust some of the settings of the materials from the. vrmat file – Preview or Live Update – refreshes the material thumbnail inside the Editor window – Save – updates. vrmat file with adjustments from Editor – Save As – allows you to save a new. vrmat file with adjustments – Recommended if you want to be able to go back to your original. vrmat file in the future Screenshot taken of V-Ray Material Editor in 3 ds Max
Lecture Conclusion: Utilities Textures • VRmat Converter • Tool used export V-Ray materials and saved into. vrmat files • VRmat Editor – Tool used to make slight modifications to materials saved into. vrmat files • Material List – Used when multiple materials are converted into a single. vrmat file
Time to see it work! • Demonstration Cycle! • Watch while I demonstrate how to export a V-Ray material from Maya and import it into Max with the VRmat Material
Time to do it yourself! • Activity Cycle! • Now it’s your turn!! • Use the provided scene file to use the VRmat Material as you have seen me demonstrate
