CITTADINANZA E COSTITUZIONE La COSTITUZIONE e l’AMBIENTE. .
WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING? Our planet is getting warmer because of global warming. Global warming is the unusual increase of temperature in the Earth’s surface in recent decades. Climate scientists believe that the main cause for global warming is too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This is an anthropological problem because the human being created global warming by burning fossil fuels such as oil, petrol, gas and coal in industries.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS … If we don’t stop global warming, the consequences on our planet will be catastrophic. Many places in the world are suffering because of this big problem. Now we’re going to explore some of these places. THE GREAT BARRIER REEF The Great Barrier Reef is on the north-east coast of Australia. It’s 2600 km long and it’s famous for its marine life and corals. Now the Barrier Reef is at risk because tourists damage corals and because of global warming. The temperature of the sea is getting warmer so the algae, the corals and the fish are dying.
THE GRAND CANYON The Grand Canyon is enormous and it’s very beautiful; in fact about 5 million people visit the Grand Canyon National Park every year. They can tour on buses, helicopters and planes; of course the traffic causes problems of noise and air pollution. But the biggest problem is air pollution coming from power stations and the big cities near the Canyon. Another problem is coming; big companies want to create uranium mines and it’ll destroy the Canyon.
THE ARTIC: ANIMALS IN DANGER Global warming is a real problem for polar bears, too. Polar bears live in the Artic circle and they live and hunt on ice in the sea. The ice is very important because polar bears hunt seals that live on the ice. In summer, the ice melts, so polar bears move to land. When they are living on land, they don’t hunt any seals. The problem is that each year, the ice is melting earlier because the Earth is getting warmer. If the ice melts earlier, polar bears won’t be able to eat enough seals; if they don’t eat seals, they will die.
WHAT CAN WE DO TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF GLOBAL WARMING? We can solve the problem of global warming, but there’s no time so we must do it quickly. We should reduce energy waste and replace electricity with alternative energy like wind power, solar power and nuclear energy. They are cheaper than electricity and they can save us, but there are some small disadvantages too, so it’s quite difficult.
AND WHAT CAN TEENAGERS DO FOR GLOBAL WARMING? Teenagers can do a lot: for example they can switch off the lights when they leave a room; turn off their phones when they aren’t using them; they can walk to school and they can eat less meat because livestock produce methane gas when they digest their food. Methane warms the earth even more than carbon dioxide.
WHAT IS THE WORLD DOING ABOUT THAT? Here are some past world conferences on global warming: -Earth Summit, Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro was the first global conference and that was in 1992. More than 100 states met in Rio and they did an important document and with this the Kyoto Protocol was then created. -Kyoto Protocol is an international treaty that came out in 1992. this there are the objectives to reduce global warming. ? ? Almost all the countries signed that but United States didn’t sign. The president now, Donald Trump, continues to say that global warming doesn’t exist to protect his economy.
-Paris Agreements At the Paris climate conference, in Dicember 2015, 195 countries such as poor countries and Norway and France, adopted the first-ever global climate deal. The objective is limit the temperature increase even further to 1. 5 degrees Celsius.
