INTERCONTINENTAL BREAKFAST "Before you've finished your breakfast this morning, you'll have relied on half the world" - Martin Luther King How do you think Martin Luther King means people will have “relied on half the world”? Can you name some things people might have for breakfast that might have come from a different country? What would you miss the most if Ireland stopped importing food from other countries?
WHICH OF THESE COME FROM IRELAND?
Get students to write a list of everything they had for breakfast/lunch. Pick some and say what country might be from. Call on students to draw arrow from the country to Ireland. Then ask students if they know of products that are made in Ireland (PCs, pharmaceuticals, beef, dairy products, Guinness etc). Using a different colour marker draw arrows linking Ireland to the countries where these might be exported.
TRADE AND INTERDEPENDENCE In 2018 Ireland sold € 140 billion of goods to other countries and bought € 90 billion of goods We are dependent on people in other countries for many of the things we use but we are also dependent on them to buy the things we produce in Ireland.
INTERDEPENDENCE Interdependence means people all over the world depend on each other. Can you think of someone in a faraway country that you depend on for something you have eaten or used today? Does this person also depend on you in some way? Explain. BEINGWELL. IE
