Glastonbury Lake Village
Looking at the finds • What do you think they are or were used for? • What are they made of? • What do they tell you about the people who lived in the Lake Village?
A bronze mirror and a bronze bracelet. You can see the hook and eye used to close the bracelet.
Four of the 35 bronze rings found at Glastonbury. The biggest ring had a diameter of 34 mm. The others have diameters of 21. 5 mm, 16. 7 mm and 12 mm. Five orange-coloured amber beads and 24 glass beads were found. Most of the glass beads were plain blue but some were blue and white. A set of bone beads were linked together to make a necklace.
This bronze bowl had been repaired several times. It was probably made in the village.
Many needles made from bronze, bone and antler were found in the village. Toggles made from antler and bronze safety pins were used to fasten clothes.
Over 5000 pieces of pottery were found. Some of pots were plain but others were decorated using the end of an antler to make the designs.
This quern stone was one of a pair of stones which sat one on top of the other. Corn was put between the two stones and then the top stone was moved round in a circle to grind the corn very small so it could be used to make bread.
Combs made out of antlers. They were used to make cloth by pushing the threads tight together which made stronger cloth.
Many wooden objects were found including these ladles, wheel spokes and a tub that might have held water, butter or milk.
Many iron objects were found and some still had wooden handles attached. They included a dagger, knives, a saw and a bill-hook used in farming.
