Glass Standards and Inspection Training Corporate Quality Training CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
Customer Focus!!!! Each customer sees Pella Corporation through the quality of our products. How would you like to be viewed? Is this OK to send to our customer? We are viewed by what we send. CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
Training Agenda 1. Background a) Glass types b) Cleanliness c) Proper lighting 2. Surface Defects 3. Edge Defects 4. Decision Summary CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
Glass Types Pella uses multiple types of glass. – – – – Clear / Annealed Hard-coat Low-E Soft-coat Low-E (Lo. E-272, Lo. E-366, etc. ) Obscured (various patterns) Colored (Bronze, Gray, etc. ) Impact / Laminated Turtle-safe Different Specifications Tempered may apply to each type! CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
Glass Cleaning and Inspection Glass can’t be inspected very well if it is dirty! Thoroughly clean glass by: – Using Alcohol (Isopropyl or Denatured) – Using Sparkle / Windex – Using Muriatic acid (to remove metal on Hardcoat only) Do NOT use Wood Wash – Can etch glass. Do NOT “scrub” low-E surfaces Do NOT use metal CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
Proper Lighting must be used when inspecting glass Similarly, glass can’t be inspected in the dark! Normal lighting conditions for inspection of glass should be similar to full daylight (w/out direct sunlight). Glass Shall be inspected while in the installed product orientation +/- 20°. 20/20 Vision Diffused Light 1700 lux (160 ft-candles) measured @ glass surface CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
Types of Defects There are essentially two types: a) Surface Defects For Glass & Coatings – Aesthetics mostly b) Edge Defects For Glass – Potential glass breakage CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
Surface Defects Point Blemishes – Seed, knot, stone – Low-E spot Linear Blemishes – – Scratch Rub Dig String CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
Allowable Defect Sizes – CLEAR 3” Max Point Blemishes: • 3/64” Max – Including distortion Linear Blemishes: • 3” Max Length 12” Min BETWEEN any blemishes 3/64” Max CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
Allowable Defect Sizes Spots, Burns, & Voids: • 3/32” Max Diameter; 1 cluster of not more than 7 similar defects within a 4” diameter Coating Scratches: • 3” Max Length, max 1 per lite Rub Marks: • 3” Max Diameter, max 1 per lite Crazing or Corrosion: • Not Allowed Coating Uniformity: • Uniformity required from any viewing direction. See ASTM C 1376 – Low-E 3” Max Scratch 3/32” Max Spot, Burn, or Void CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
HOW do we Inspect? Start @ 3 ft (roughly arms length) and look for defects: Visible Not - Visible 3 ft Undecided Accept Check @ 6 ft Defects viewable at less than 3 ft are allowable, regardless of size & quantity, provided they are NOT visible @ 3 ft CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
If Undecided: THEN – Inspect @ 6 ft Still Visible Not - Visible 6 ft Reject Accept – Provided: Size and shape does not matter Defect size and quantity specifications are met CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
Edge Defect Types: Glass Edge Defects are classified as follows: – – Shell Chip Rough Chip “V” Chip Flake Chip Tempered glass’ edges are chamfered with a “seaming” or “swiping” process to remove MOST edge defects. CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
Shell Chip Example Smooth, shell like chip at the edge less than (1/2) the glass thickness and ¼ inch maximum width one per edge, maximum four per lite are allowed. CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
Rough Chip Example Rough chips, or other “crush like” areas are not allowed. These are VERY likely to cause future cracks! CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
V-chip “V” or sharp notched chips are not allowed as these are VERY likely to cause future cracks! CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
Flake Chip Example Smooth, shallow, shell like chip on the edge less than 0. 02 inch (1/64”), deep or wide are allowed. CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
Specifications • • • (1) Max chip per edge NO “V” chips D < ½ thickness W < ¼” L<2 x. W Viewing distance does NOT matter for Edge Defects!!! CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
Decision Summary Edge or surface defect? EDGE Measure Regardless of distance SURFACE Defect visible @ 3 feet? YES Still visible @ 6 feet? NO NO Measure Defect(s) YES REJECT NO Within size/qty limits? CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3 YES ACCEPT
When you need help: If you are unsure on what is allowable, and what is not, there at least 3 locations to go for reference: – Pella Glass Standards – PDS 147 – Process Control Documents – Quality Guidelines – Other Quality Lab Personnel CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
Final word… Proper identification and inspection helps us… MAINTAIN COSTS and helps our customers… GET THE BEST QUALITY that they expect from Pella. CR. TR. QA. 00003 Revision 3
