Glance Traceability Web System for Equipment Traceability and Radiation Monitoring for the ATLAS Experiment : adding and removing zones from Setting the radiation background Introduction The running of the Large Hadron Collider exposes the ATLAS detector to radiation. Therefore, CERN shall follow specific regulation from French and Swiss authorities for equipment removal, transport, repair, and disposal. During the operation, maintenance, and dismantling periods of the ATLAS Experiment, the traceability of all detector equipment must be guaranteed for logistic and safety matters. The system described has been developed to track location, monitor radiation, and store property data of thousands of equipment within the detector facilities. The value of the local radiation background gets stored using the radiation monitor. The threshold used for the equipment dose is one and a half the average of the background value during the measuring time. Only radioprotection experts are allowed to access this Automatic or manual input functionality. The API provides the data queried in a XML description, that is parsed and interpreted by the system. Interface / Peripherals The label printer and the radiation monitor communication is achieved through java applets. Another value-added-service is ATLASlocation 3 D, a GUI in java / java 3 D, which synthesizes a 3 D view of ATLAS starting from geometry data stored in the database. Radiation control of equipment is performed using a radiation monitor connected to the system. If the dose measure exceeds the background, an alert message is displayed. History for location traceability and radiation measurements are displayed on the interface. Tracking the location ATLASlocation 3 D • Allows radioprotection experts and systems users to associate equipment parts to functional positions inside the ATLAS cavern • Offers a schematic view of the ATLAS detector, identifying the nuclear zone, and splitting the sub-detectors. Actors The ATLAS equipment management inside and outside the cavern is handled by people with different roles in the experiment, which are managed by specifics privileges on the system and they are listed below: • Radioprotection Expert - person trained to handle radioactive parts and nuclear waste. • Material Responsible - has the responsibility to ensure the correct handling of his material • Workshop/Institute Manager - in charge of the equipment management in its workshop or institute • ATLAS systems user – responsible for equipment in the conventional non radioactive zone of a specific subdetector, or general infrastructure and services.
