Giving Presentations It is common for Outreach Ambassadors to give presentations either about their own subject area or concerning general information about university life or Higher Education. Depending on the nature of the project, support will be provided by tutors in the planning, preparation and evaluation. You may be able to research and devise the content yourself and may deliver this on your own or in a group. Some examples: subject focused talks; theatrical productions; contributions to school-led projects; talks about student life. www. worcester. ac. uk

Planning Presentations • Plan and practice your presentation in advance. • Match the content with the audience: • what do they already know & what do you want them to know? • What is your key message? • In the introduction say what you will talk about and what your aim is • Match the level of detail to the time you have allocated for the presentation. Delivering Presentations • Dress well, smile and be positive, making good eye contact. • Greet your audience and introduce yourself. Give a brief outline of who you are & why you are there, what you are studying, what year you are in. • Make eye contact with the audience. • Speak clearly and not too quickly. Address your voice to someone at the back. • Keep your language simple and avoid jargon. • Use silence to emphasis the main points. • Avoid reading out notes. Delivering Presentations • Build in variety – the average attention span is 3 minutes! • Allow time for questions during and at the end of the session. • Be prepared for questions on any subject. Try to be informative but professional with your replies. • Build rapport by involving people through asking questions and encouraging them to discuss issues. • If you are using technology (i. e. Power. Point) make sure everything is in place and working. Try to arrive at the location early to give yourself time to familiarise yourself with the equipment. • Practise, practise.
