WHAT ARE PANDAS ? Pandas are a type of bear. Their fur is black and white. It can help them camouflage but it can take a while for them to hide. The black can blend in with dark colours and the white blend in with snow.
WHERE PANDAS LIVE? PANDAS LIVE MOSTLY IN CHINA, 1, 864 GIANT PANDAS REMAIN IN THE WILD IN CHINA. THEY LIVE IN THE RAINFOREST WHICH IS A VERY SPECIAL KIND IN CHINA CALLED THE BAMBOO RAINFORESTS IN THE HIGH MOUNTAINS. FACT: ALTHOUGH IT IS A FOREST, BAMBOO IS NOT ACTUALLY A SPECIES OF TREE, IN FACT IT IS THE WORLD'S LARGEST SPECIES OF GRASS.
WHAT IS PUTTING THEM IN DANGER? • Giant pandas that are fully grown have no predator's, but the cubs have to get protected as they can be preyed on by jackals, snow leopards and yellow throated martens. • Giant pandas have been in endangered since 1990 because of poaching and their food source disappearing – this is called deforestation. Since then the WWF have worked hard to help the pandas survive and are now classed as vulnerable which is good news for the pandas. Humans still remain the Giant Pandas biggest threat!
WHAT PANDAS EAT ? BAMBOO IS THE MAIN THING PANDAS EAT. THEY EAT AND FIND THEIR FOOD FOR HALF OF THE DAY. BAMBOO IS: • LOW IN PROTEIN • HIGH IN FIBER 99% OF PANDAS DIET IS BAMBOO AND THEY NEED TO EAT ABOUT 20 -40 POUNDS A DAY.
This is the really thick one When they are not eating bamboo they rest, nap and poo! WHAT PANDAS DO FOR THE OTHER HALF OF THE DAY ? Facts • Pandas go to poo 100 times a day, pandas 100 poos can weigh 4 bowling balls. • Giant Pandas can live for 20 years. I have lots of bamboo in my garden but no pandas have come to tea yet!
BABY PANDAS! Pandas have small baby cubs because of their poor diet. Baby pandas are born blind, helpless and tiny. The mum pandas normally weigh 220 pounds and the one-day old baby pandas are 5 ounces.
WWF The WWF began on 29 April 1961. It is the world’s leading independent conservation organisation and their mission is to create a world where people and wildlife can thrive together. The Giant Panda mascot originated from a panda named Chi that was transferred from the Beijing Zoo to the London Zoo in the same year. It was the only giant panda residing in the western world at the time and with its physical features and status as an endangered species meant it was a strong and good choice of symbol to represent the organisation.
