GHENT CENTRE FOR DIGITAL HUMANITIES Web-Mapping, Web-GIS and Visualization of Geospatial Data “Introducing Research Practices and Tools for Digital Humanities” 1 -2 November 2018, Trondheim
Visualisation of geospatial data
What is Web-Mapping? • Type of digital mapping • Maps that are online • Maps that allow users interact with them and customise them -- a process through which the map user becomes the map-maker (web mapping 2. 0 ) 3
What can humanities researchers use Web Mapping for? Public outreach of research results & feedback Crowdsourcing information 4
The workshop on web mapping and geovisualisation this afternoon • Geojson geospatial data format • Javascript librariers that serve web mapping and web GIS – Mapbox • Arc. GIS online • Open. Street. Map (OSM) • Geovisualisation with R
1) GEOJSON: an open standard geospatial data format for online mapping • You can create data in Geo. JSON format using GIS software such as Arc. GIS & QGIS • … or web GIS tools like Carto. com (elements of which you can also use in your own applications) • … 6
2) Javascript Libraries • They typically work very well with Geo. JSON • Webmapping libraries: Leaflet, Mapbox, Open. Layers, Dojo (Arc. GIS API for Java. Script), Google Maps API 7
Mapbox • Examples of some applications where Mapbox is used: Financial Times Le Monde USA Today – election results 8
Potenza Valley Survey - Arches 9
Without Mapbox or similar (javascript) cartographic libraries… • There would be map tile providers. . . • that would charge you for creating custom map tiles for your mobile and online applications • that would charge you for storing those tiles in their servers (terrabytes and terrabytes of storage space you would need) • …and you would have to write code in javascript for hours (or pay somebody to write codes in javascript for hours) to interact with your tiles (i. e. in order to zoom in and out of your map, making things pop up when you click on the map, add markers and custom pins etc. ) 10
3) Arc. GIS Online • A web-based GIS • Create, manage and analyse spatial data online • Data layers, maps and apps created by an online global community of users (e. g. individuals, municipalities, government organisations, private organisations) • Make online maps and share them 11
4) Open. Street. Map web mapping 2. 0 … “the free wiki world map”
5) Geovisualisation with R or Using R as GIS Is GIS software dead?
