HEALTHCARE IN GHANA Universal Healthcare System with National Health Insurance Scheme Originally a “cash and carry” system of healthcare delivery Ghana has five levels of providers: health posts which are first level primary care for rural areas, health centers and clinics, district hospitals, regional hospitals and tertiary hospitals.
CHARITY BEYOND BORDERS Charity Beyond Borders is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing basic healthcare services as well as health education to the people of Ghana. In 2005 a student from Ghana enrolled in the Weber State University Respiratory Care Program and invited Lisa Trujillo, Director of Clinical Education, to come back to Ghana and share education about respiratory therapy and general health For over a decade Charity Beyond Borders has traveled to Ghana to provide education courses in the community, teaching centers, and hospitals, as well as basic health clinics within the villages
RESPIRATORY THERAPY IN GHANA Only the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital out of Ghana’s 5, 354 health facilities has a qualified respiratory therapist. The Center for Disease Control identifies the respiratory disease as one of the world’s leading cause of mortality -higher than malaria.
BSRT DEVELOPMENT IN GHANA BSRT program approved to begin in August 2015 First two years completing general education requirements and science courses Year three and four comprised of respiratory specific curriculum, during which students will travel to WSU or KUMC to participate in a concentrated laboratory/clinical experience and to spend time in clinical rotations Pilot program for other institutions through out Ghana and possibly a model for the introduction of respiratory therapy in other developing nations

EDUCATION Martin Luther Health Training School Students Volunteers were split into four groups to rotate through classrooms and teach various topics, including Adult CPR, Pediatric CPR, and Community Health Education
Dr. Trujillo presents on healthcare-professional specific CPR before splitting into two groups for more specialized classes such as ventilator modes and settings Classes also taught at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and various other hospitals and medical schools
