The CPU… a part you should know “Central Processing Unit” • This is the main part of the computer. • It’s also known as the “brains” because it holds all of the information. • The CPU can either lay flat under the monitor or stand up next to the monitor or on the ground.
What’s a monitor? • It is the other main part of the computer. • It looks like a television set. • The screen allows you to view programs and files, the work you’ve completed and the websites you want to go to.
Examples of Hardware is any part of the computer you can touch. It includes the CPU, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and printer.
Disk Drives • This is where you insert a disk for the CPU to “read”. • You can store information on portable disks through these drives. • There are many types of disk drives: » » Floppy disk drive CD-ROM drive DVD drive Zip drive
What is a CD ROM? • CD ROM stands for compact disc, read only memory. • It is a compact disc that has data that is meant to be read by computer, but not created by one.
Software • Software is a collection of computer programs or procedures that perform some tasks on a computer. • Some commonly used software – – Microsoft Word – Microsoft Power. Point – Microsoft Excel
Browser • Commonly referred to as a web browser, it is a software application meant for retrieving, presenting, and collecting information on the World Wide Web. • Some examples – – Internet Explorer – Firefox – America Online
Wanna Byte? • A byte is the term used for a basic unit of storage on a computer.
Modem • A modem is an electronic piece of equipment consisting of a device used to connect computers by a telephone line. By connecting to a telephone line, or high-speed connection, the user can now use their computer to access the World Wide Web.
What’s a URL? • Uniform Resource Locator • This is otherwise known as an address used to locate a specific resource on the Internet.
