Getting to Grips with Unconscious Bias Unconscious bias
Getting to Grips with Unconscious Bias Unconscious bias is getting a lot of airplay in the area of diversity and inclusion in business and understandably so. It is impacting so many of the decisions we make and the results that we get, without us being consciously aware of its effects. Our unconscious biases directly affect not only who gets hired, developed and promoted, but also the ability of teams to perform at a high level, the effectiveness of our leaders in decision -making and change, the health of an organisation’s culture and the relationship it has with its customers. Unconscious bias happens automatically, is outside of our control and is triggered by our brain making quick judgements and assessments of people and situations, influenced by our background, cultural environment and personal experiences. By its very nature of being unconscious, we are unable to rid ourselves of our bias, but we can develop our levels of self-awareness and open our minds to explore practical ways to implement systems and processes that can mitigate levels of bias in the workplace and reduce their impact. Getting to Grips with Unconscious Bias is a highly interactive workshop that explores the world of human evolution, neuroscience and the different approaches being taken to address workplace bias.
