Hello…. . • I’m Tracey Thaw and I’ll be teaching Higher Business Management. Hopefully we will get the chance to talk to each other at the start of the next academic year but in the meantime, this short Power. Point will give you an idea of what you will be studying and it gives you a specific research activity to complete. Good Luck
Qualification Purpose This course highlights the different ways in which large organisations operate. You will learn to use business information to interpret & report on overall business performance, in a range of contexts. Using current business theory and practice, this course reflects the integrated nature of large organisations, their functions and decision-making processes
Specific Aims – you will develop understanding of: – The ways in which society relies on organisations and how external influences can affect them – A range of methods that businesses and other organisations use to meet customer needs – Enterprising skills and attitudes – How to analyse and interpret business information and communicate it in a clear and concise way.
Overview and Introduction In Higher Business Management you will study the following three areas: • Understanding Business • Management of Marketing and Operations • Management of People and Finance
Understanding Business Key concepts: • Business sectors • Types of organisations • Business Structures • Stakeholders • Factors affecting an organisation • Organisational growth
Management of People and Finance • Recruitment and selection • Training • Leadership • Motivation • Employee Relations • Employment Law • Sources of Finance • Budgeting • Financial Statements • Ratio analysis
Management of Marketing and Operations • Customers • Methods of production • Marketing research • Quality • Marketing Mix • Inventory Management – Product – Place – Price – Promotion – People – Processes – Physical Evidence • Ethical & Environmental Concerns
Higher Business Management Ø What you will do: Ø Studying different subjects each week and building your knowledge and understanding Ø Complete short assessment tasks for each area of study Ø And depending on the regulations in place at the time: Ø Produce a research assignment report which is worth 30 marks Ø Sit an exam which will be 2 hours and 45 minutes in length which is worth 90 marks
Take a few minutes to consider the following questions: • What are your expectations of the course? • What do you hope to gain from the course? Write down or type up your answers to these 2 questions as you will need them as we progress through the course
Individual Research Activity Your task: Undertake internet research and answer the following questions: • Explain the role/purpose of a business – This should be explained in three or four sentences • Identify one large organisation (over 250 employees) anywhere in the UK … think about the different businesses that you use or come in to contact with like retail stores, transport providers or the companies that make your favourite food, clothes or tech. • Explain what this organisation does…. What are the services/products, who are the customers? • Describe two factors/events which have had an impact on this organisation over the last year and explain what the impact on the business has been e. g financial, loss of staff, closure, recruitment of staff, growth? • Summarise your findings in a brief Power. Point Presentation or Word document which we will review in August
