Topics 2018 Road to SAFETY EXCELLENCE EHS Safety Share 1. The Old Way - Managing safety conformance/compliance 2. New Direction: Leading Indicators 3. The Future: New Technology 2
1. The Old Way Managing safety conformance/compliance • Historically, many safety and conformance/compliance programs have had a ‘non-systematic’ managerial approach • Many safety initiatives deemed as flavor of the month • The best tools may be used, but collected data not fully utilized 3
1. The Old Way Managing safety conformance/compliance Current paper-based method of inspection: 1. Safety rep. /Ops leader/Supervisor or crew conduct inspection. 2. Non-conformance/compliance findings are either addressed immediately or corrective action assigned on paper. 3. Evidence of completed action emailed to company inspector or EHS. 4. Case closed. Ultimately, we are managing non-conformance in a bubble. 4
1. The Old Way Managing safety conformance/compliance I remember… Boxes of paper based safety documentation mailed to me after a month of collection. In 2014, in Canada we were averaging 1100+ rig inspections a month by drillers, supervision and EHS personnel. (Not including daily pre-operational checks) I remember being asked what I was doing with the data… …what could I do? At best I could get a ‘gut feeling’ about a specific site, based on what I skimmed through. The problem is, without the data, you’re just another person with an opinion! 5
2. New Direction 2018 The fundamental issue with managing in a bubble or in isolation is that it is difficult in hind-sight to determine whether or not you have systemic problems. Safety performance measured using lagging indicators mean’s you’re already ‘behind the 8 ball’. We then struggle to determine all too often what went wrong. 6
2. New Direction 2018 To effectively manage non-conformance/compliance data, firstly we need to get rid of the old way, and pop the bubble. 7
2. New Direction 2018 New technology now allows us to use collected information to properly track and trend non-conformance data. 8
3. The Future New Technology Imagine now that non-conformance data is being collected in the system. 1. In May there were 12 non-conformances found by EHS and Operations 2. In June there were 13 non-conformances found 3. In July, there were 14 non-conformances found What does the data tell you? 9
3. The Future New Technology For the first time prior to an incident you can ‘red flag’ a drill crew, project, or a region due to negative conformance to a company standard or legislative requirement. This gives you the power to proactively address the issues. 10
3. The Future New Technology Historically, we would manage safety programs and initiatives by filing them in a cabinet for reference, ‘just in case’ someone wanted proof we did something for safeties sake. Using today’s technology, not only can we prove we’re doing something, we can do something about what we find. 11
