Can we predict the formula of a compound? • Yes we can be considering the valency of the atoms within the compound • So what is valency? – Valency is the number of bonds, or arms, that an atom has in order to join to other atoms which determines the formulae of molecules and compounds it creates – We are going to think of valency as a combining power and extend this idea to not just atoms but particles as well
