Definition A verb that ends in –ING AND Is acting like a noun in the sentence -person, place, thing, idea -subject, DO, in a prep phrase
Examples 1. Praying is something I do a lot 2. In the end, leaving was the best decision that we made. 3. Scratching is not good for your skin. 4. My dog enjoys walking. 5. As a teacher, I cannot allow cheating. 6. I don’t like playing basketball.
How to find a gerund 1. Look for an –ing verb 2. Find all the words that go with the –ing verb 3. Test if the phrase that can be replaced by “something”, “it”, or “this” -The gerund is the verb ending in –ing -The gerund phrase is all the descriptive words that go with the gerund
Examples 1. Giving money and food to people in need will make you feel good. 2. Signing up for a soccer team might help you improve your skills. 3. She continued arguing even after it was clear that I had won. 4. If you keep spending all your money on clothes, you won’t have any food.
Not every ING verb is a gerund! 1. 2. 3. 4. The girl was running through the hallways. Running through the hallways is dangerous. Students are also breaking the rules. Students will be making lunch in the cafeteria. 5. The punishment will be working in the cafeteria 6. I have a problem with making salads.
