A DIVIDED GERMANY Today the reunified Germany is one of the largest countries in Europe. After World War II, Germany was divided by the following countries: United States France United Kingdom Soviet Union
West Germany The United States helped West Germany set up a democratic government after World War II. Located between Western Europe and the communist Eastern European countries. With US loans, experienced an economic miracle. Within twenty years, rebuilt its factories and became one of the world’s richest nations. Its economy became a driving force behind the European Union.
Mrs. Schauer was stationed in Augsburg Arrived at age 19. Was stationed there with the Army for 18 months. Did lots of traveling all around Germany.
Mrs. Schauer visited Dachau Concentration camp outside Munich, Germany. Residents claim they didn’t know it was there. Sign at entrance states “werk macht frei. ”
She also visited lots of castles…Her favorite was Neuschwanstein.
She also Volksmarched Organized walks. Different locations each Saturday. Great way to meet people. Really good food!

East Germany remained very poor. Communist government discouraged contrasting East Germany and West Germany. By 1989 the Soviet’s control of Eastern Europe started to weaken. East Germans left by crossing through Hungary into Austria and finally into West Germany. When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, more East Germans fled to West Germany.

Reunified Germany German government spent billions of dollars to: Rebuild the eastern part of the country. Build roads, factories, housing, and hospitals. Rebuild Berlin, which is once again the capital. Restore the Reichstag where the Federal Assembly meets.
Tensions Reunification caused tension between the “Ossies” and the “Wessies. ” Ossies complain about the lack of jobs and cost of housing. Wessies complain about paying taxes to rebuild the nation and to support former East Germans.

German Culture—Music Germans are proud of their music and literature. Well known musicians include: Johann Sebastian Back (1685 -1750) George Frederick Handel (1685 -1759) Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 -1827)
