Monasteries Monks are men who separate themselves from society to pursue a life of dedication to God Living the life of a monk is known as monasticism Monasticism was originally based off the life of hermits, who isolated themselves to live a more spiritual life Saint Benedict founded a community for monks, or a monastery, and set forth the rules, that would be followed by most monasteries Rules included emphasis on constant work or prayer, and a communal life The leader was known as the abbot and had complete authority over the other monks Women also practiced monasticism and were known as nuns They lived in monasteries lead by an abbess
