Letters and Sounds • • A hard ‘c’ in English is a ‘k’ in German. ‘sh’ becomes German ‘sch’ A soft ‘c’ in English becomes a ‘z’ in German. Two dots over the vowels a, o, and u is called Umlaut. It changes the pronunciation of the vowel. Examples: backer = baker in English, Ol = oil in English and grun = green in English.
