Student Competition Where would YOU place the next geothermal production well at the FORGE site in Utah? GTO is challenging students to use spatial and statistical data analysis and visualization. • • Administered by Idaho National Lab, this competition is open to university and high school students nationwide. 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place winners will receive a cash prize. Student teams can win up to $5, 000. Challenge: • • • Analyze publicly available FORGE data. Develop a thesis and propose a site. Create no more than 10 data visualizations. Submit final portfolio, along with a one-page explanation, by April 10. To learn more, visit utahforge. com/studentcomp Register now! Final portfolios are due April 10. U. S. Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy: A Roadmap Alexis Mc. Kittrick, Ph. D. Research Staff Member, IDA/STPI February 19, 2019 Geothermal Technologies Office / Q 1 2019 Webinar
IDA Science and Technology Policy Institute (STPI) • Federally funded research and development center • Operated by a not-for-profit corporation, the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) • Congressionally chartered to support the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and other Executive Branch S&T agencies • Provides rigorous and objective advice and analysis, including: – Policy assessments – Strategic planning – Technology evaluation 8
FORGE Roadmap Objectives • GTO requested STPI develop a roadmap to provide recommendations for the critical research that will occur during the 5 -year implementation phase of FORGE • The research recommendations are intended to make progress towards a rigorous and reproducible EGS methodology • The roadmap combines feedback from the EGS research community with DOE’s EGS priorities to represent the most critical areas of research for FORGE 9
Value of Community Input • EGS community input was used to inform the technical foundation of the roadmap, alongside other inputs: – Literature review – DOE and EGS research community interviews – FORGE Roadmap Development Workshop • FORGE Roadmap offers guidance from EGS community to managers and operators of the site: – Utah FORGE Team – Science and Technology Analysis Team (STAT) – DOE GTO 10
Overview of STPI’s Roadmap Development Process 11
FORGE Roadmap Scope • The FORGE Roadmap describes: – Critical research areas that, if successfully executed, can overcome key technical challenges facing EGS, including: • Core research actions that have no known technical solution or must be addressed to develop a rigorous and reproducible EGS methodology • Supporting research actions that would improve existing technical solutions to enable a robust methodology across EGS reservoirs with a variety of characteristics – Enabling R&D that has the potential to enhance knowledge, capabilities, and operational expertise in EGS development, but does not fall into a critical research area – Implementation principles that can enhance the usefulness of data collected at FORGE • The following topics are considered out of scope: – Individual research projects – Economic, social, and regulatory barriers to EGS commercialization – Public engagement 12

Questions? www. energy. gov/eere/geothermal We always welcome your feedback. DOE. geothermal@ee. doe. gov The Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) works to reduce the cost and risk associated with geothermal development by supporting innovative technologies that address key exploration and operational challenges. By advancing the value stream for grid (electricity) production and deep direct-use, GTO aims to make geothermal energy a cost-competitive, widely available, geographically diverse component of the national energy mix.
